N.J. community grieves loss of 4 football players in fatal SUV crash

LINWOOD, N.J. - A New Jersey high school and its community were grappling yesterday with a hard reality: Four players on their local football team died and four others were injured in an SUV crash on the way to a team meal.

The driver, Casey Brenner, 17, of Northfield, apparently lost control of the vehicle late Saturday morning as it went around a crest on the Garden State Parkway and came upon heavy traffic, said Sergeant Julian Castellanos, a State Police spokesman.

The SUV overturned several times, ejecting two passengers, one of whom was struck by a passing car, Castellanos said.

All eight teens played for the Mainland Regional High School football team in Linwood. They ranged in age from 15 to 17.

The crash hung heavy over the community yesterday, where filling bleachers at the school’s Friday night games is part of life every fall. The Mustangs have won six state championships, including five since Bob Coffey became head coach in 1986.

Before the crash, perhaps the greatest trial for the team came when it had to forfeit four games last year for using a player who transferred from another school and suited up without all the proper paperwork in place.

The victims’ teammates planned to don game jerseys for the first time with their names stitched above the numbers to attend an evening vigil Sunday. And they expected to be together for funerals in the coming days.

Coffey said he would look for direction from his players but expected that practices would move ahead in some form. But two scrimmages scheduled for this week were canceled.

Brenner was killed, as were Dean Khoury, 15, of Linwood; and two 16-year-olds, Edgar Bozzi of Somers Point and Nicholas Conner of Northfield.

“All four of them were so happy, doing so well,’’ said Coffey, who lives a few blocks from the high school in a spacious house where his players often gather.

Superintendent Thomas Baruffi said the four who died were good students and athletes.

NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard and Offseason Deals for All 30 Teams

The offseason is already underway for 28 of the NBA's 30 teams.  They're all looking to the draft, free agency and the trade market to try to figure out how to play into June for some future season.

Every offseason, there seems to be a few big trades that we feel at the time might change the balance of power in the league.

This year, several big names have already emerged in the rumor mill.

Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Andre Iguodala are just a few who might be available this summer.  There are several more.

Some of the details I'll present in this slideshow may be a little outrageous.  Others make perfect sense.  Here are potential offseason trades for all 30 teams...

Terry's ink tells a story

 http://www.nfl.com/
Once upon a time tattoos used to be cool, an anti-social activity in the 1960s that grew to be a trendy fashion statement by the '90s.
A taboo confined to sailors and Samoans, these days tattoos are routinely seen on everything from rock stars to movie stars but NBA players take the cake. To quote Liz Lemon on NBC's brilliant comedy 30 Rock: "The tattoo situation in the NBA is out of control."
Whether it's Chris "Birdman" Andersen's garish "Free Bird" neck tat, Jason Williams' humorous "Whiteboy" knuckle ink or Brad Miller's "Scrappy Doo" mistake, tattoos are a bigger part of The Association than Blake Griffin posterizations and Ray Allen threes.
One of the most compelling storylines to watch in these NBA Finals will be if DeShawn Stevenson, a solid perimeter defender, can at least slow down LeBron James a bit. Perhaps that is unlikely but his "Abraham Lincoln Five-Dollar Bill" neck ink can certainly rival The King's "Chosen 1" back tat in the buyer's remorse category.
Of all the tattoos you will be seeing at the NBA Finals, one seems apropos, however.
Mavericks guard Jason Terry got a tattoo of the NBA championship trophy on his right biceps before the start of the 2010-11 season.
"It symbolized the fact we had a realistic shot of getting there," Terry told the Dallas Morning News. "If I didn't think we had a chance, I definitely wouldn't have put that on there."
It also helps fuel "The Jet," the NBA's 2009 Sixth Man of the Year and the Mavs' second best scoring option behind superstar Dirk Nowitzki.
"For me, it's something I have to sleep with, something I wake up with."
Conventional wisdom says you need two superstars to win in the NBA these days. Miami brings three to the dance in James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh while Dirk is the only certified All-Star in Dallas these days.
Terry, however, headlines a veteran supporting cast long on leadership and former All-Stars, including 38-year-old point guard Jason Kidd, former Phoenix star Shawn Marion and sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic.

"For us, right now, the journey we're on, the mission we're on, it doesn't feel like anything more than what it is," Terry said on Monday. "I think it's important we continue to keep that mind frame and come out really focused in on Game 1. It's a very important game for us."
Terry also isn't concerned that Miami has some-court advantage in the set.
"We love being on the road," the Mavs' sixth man said. "To be able to start on the road in a situation of this magnitude, it's very fine for us. We have a veteran group here. Going in on the road, it's not new to us. We love the atmosphere, the environment."
The steady hand of Kidd, a 10-time All-Star that has been on this stage before with New Jersey, seems to give Terry and the rest of his teammates confidence to handle the energy of enemy buildings
"I think it comes from your veteran leadership," Terry said of his team's confidence. "Guys realizing that the opportunity is now, guys realizing that this opportunity doesn't come very often. The team we put together this season has been a special group. We felt that from day one."

Perhaps Terry felt it even before day one when he decided to use Stevenson's personal tattoo artist to put the Larry O'Brien Trophy on his arm, something he has vowed to remove if he and the Mavericks fail to reach their ultimate goal
"I definitely know it's going to hurt worse if I have to take this thing off," Terry said. "[But] it means it was bad luck [if the Mavs lose}. I'm very superstitious."
Superstitious enough to leave the trophy open so he could fill in the date of Dallas' first championship.

Injuries Plague Heat Going Into NBA Finals

The Miami Heat have a handful of regulars nursing injuries one day before the start of the NBA Finals.
Reserve swingman Mike Miller said Monday that his injured left thumb will continue to bother him until he has offseason surgery. The injury doesn't seem to be bothering him as he totaled 19 points in the last two games of the Eastern Conference finals after managing just two in the first three games vs. Chicago.
Reserve forward James Jones is no longer wearing the walking boot he was using to protect his injured toe during the conference finals. He also is nursing a bad back.
Jones is averaging 6.5 points in the postseason but missed the first three games vs. Chicago.
Superstar guard Dwyane Wade has a well-chronicled sore left shoulder that is not expected to limit him in the Finals vs. the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 30.2 points and shot better than 52 percent in the conference semifinals vs. Boston but just 18.8 points on 40.5 percent shooting vs. Chicago.

2011 NBA Mock Draft: Which Players Can Make an Impact in Rookie Season?

http://sports.yahoo.com/
The 2011 NBA Draft will showcase players who have such a developed game that they could immediately contribute to some NBA teams. Top lottery picks are often taken by teams with such dire needs that they are usually willing to chance starting the untested rookie over their other options.

We have seen players such as Kevin Durant and John Wall have instant results for the franchises that took them early in the draft.

Kyrie Irving looks to be a sure thing, and will be battling with veteran Baron Davis for the starting PG spot on the Cleveland Cavaliers. If he does not start, look for him to log big minutes coming off the bench and gaining experience in the Cavs system.

Derrick Williams, if he lands somewhere besides Minnesota or they make a trade, has the potential to be an immediate impact player as well. The man can simply score, rebound, and make basketball plays that will help whoever takes him win.

Besides the consensus top two overall picks, other players should be able to help their teams come the start of the regular season.

Jimmer Fredette has a transcendent offensive skill set, and if he lands with the right team and system, he should be able to get a quick start in the league.

Klay Thompson is probably the most gifted three-ball shooter in the draft, and if a team looking for a long-range gunner selects him, he should log minutes early and often.

Alec Burks also has the potential to see minutes at the beginning of his rookie campaign, who has size and production capability that matches any 2 guard in the league today.

These are just a few of the players who have the experience and skill sets necessary to potentially help their teams right away.

The NBA and Homosexuality: Anti-Gay Slurs, Fines and "Think Before You Speak"

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/

The NBA is currently under fire after a brash of anti-gay slurs were captured on camera. Joakim Noah was fined $50,000 for using an anti-gay slur at a fan. Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 dollars for using the same slur at an official.

Shortly after Bryant used the slur, he apologized, and the Lakers announced they were teaming up with GLAAD, (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), to bring attention to the harm anti-gay remarks can cause.

Earlier this Spring, Suns' CEO Rick Welts told the world he was a homosexual. The reception around the league has been very accepting. Welts has received an overwhelming amount of support from around those involved directly with the Suns and otherwise.

His story proves you can be a homosexual and hold a prominent position in the league. The story comes at nearly the same time ESPN broke a story where ex-Villanova's basketball player, Will Sheridan, declared he was gay.

When asked about Kobe's usage of a gay slur, Welts had this to say, "He was just into the game at that point. It's not acceptable, but I consider it another step in having it be part of the conversation. It got of people talking about the use of that slur, people that wouldn't have talked about it. In some ways, it was constructive."

Welts is a representative of someone directly involved in the NBA who can also speak for the homosexual community. If speaking about the matter is constructive, the media is moving mountains.

It's hard to believe that either Noah or Bryant intended to start a media whirlwind. I find it unlikely that they are homophobic or have problems with the gay community.

The slur they said was not in jest. They said it to hurt the recipient. Is it possible then that they were caught up in the moment? Did they choose a word that is considered offensive without thinking of the baggage the word carries, or the hurt that comes with it?

It's quite possible. It seems as though people use these words every day completely out of the context of the situation at hand. How many times do you hear statements like, "that car is gay". Clearly the car isn't a homosexual, but the personification is commonplace.

In walks the NBA, once more. Grant Hill and Jared Dudley join the "Think before you speak" ad campaign and come out with a commercial addressing this very topic.

The commercial encourages people to stop saying phrases like "that's so gay". They encourage people to stop using gay as a substitute for the word stupid.

The NBA is making headlines on both ends of the spectrum here. Maybe players will become more cautious about what they are saying and who they are offending. Maybe fans will follow suit. Perhaps this goes beyond homosexuality and beyond the NBA

Kicking themselves?

 http://aol.sportingnews.com/
The Dallas Mavericks secured their place in the NBA Finals Wednesday evening by eliminating the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat can do the same on Thursday night with a win over the Chicago Bulls. Which, only naturally, probably has a few guys who spent the year in green wondering if they might still be playing if things had played out a little differently.

Start with Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal, who last summer narrowed his three finalists to Boston, Dallas, and Denver. It was the Celtics' offer of their full mid-level exception that helped lure O'Neal to Boston. Which is a bit ironic because the Mavericks never used their own mid-level exception during the offseason and, when Corey Brewer landed on the buyout scrapheap, it was that exception that allowed them to outbid the likes of Boston to obtain his services for the final stretch of the season.

Which might have also played a part in Sasha Pavlovic landing in Boston. Pavlovic had signed two 10-day contracts with the Mavericks back in January, appearing in 10 games, but the team never committed to signing him for the rest of the season. Reports indicated that Pavlovic was on Dallas' radar if they couldn't obtain Brewer. Instead, it was the Celtics inking Pavlovic almost immediately after Brewer made his decision to go to the Mavericks.

Both Troy Murphy and Carlos Arroyo have to be watching the Heat while wondering what could have been. After being traded to, and then released by, the Golden State Warriors in February, Murphy had his choice of suitors and it was the Celtics and Heat that engaged in a tug-of-war with Boston ultimately prevailing. Previously, Miami jettisoned Arroyo with the opportunity to ink Mike Bibby, this after Arroyo had fallen out of favor despite starting 42 games with the Heat this season.
